Show HN: Interactive systemd – a better way to work with systemd units - Project Screenshot

URL: https://isd-project.github.io/isd/

Author: kai-tub

Description: I created a TUI for systemd/systemctl called isd (interactive systemd).

It provides a fuzzy search for units, auto-refreshing previews, smart sudo handling, and a fully customizable, keyboard-focused interface for power users and newcomers alike.

It is a more powerful (but heavier) version of sysz, which was the inspiration for the project.

This should be a huge timesaver for anybody who frequently interacts with or edits systemd units/services. And if not, please let me know why! :)

3. Show HN: Billion Cell Spreadsheets with Incremental Computation

Show HN: Billion Cell Spreadsheets with Incremental Computation - Project Screenshot

URL: https://xls.feldera.io

Author: gz09

Description: I figured this might be interesting for some here. This is a demo we built to showcase computation with Feldera (SQL compiled to Rust circuits that evaluate input incrementally): https://github.com/feldera/feldera

The gist of it is that if you update a cell, we incrementally update the spreadsheet which means we will only emit a minimal amount of changes for the cells affected by your update. The nice thing about it is that this is something that Feldera does automatically (and it would do that for any SQL that you end up writing, so it doesn't have to be a spreadsheet, but a spreadsheet is a nice example that everyone understands and knows about).

There is a more detailed explanation in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROa4duVqoOs if you're interested what's going on under the hood -- or if you prefer reading about it we have an article series that goes over all the parts of the demo

2. API server (Rust/Axum hosted on fly.io) https://docs.feldera.com/use_cases/real_time_apps/part2

Description: Hi Hacker News,

We’ve built Pitch Forge, an AI-powered SaaS tool designed to help startups create investor-ready pitch decks in minutes.

How it works:

1. Input your startup’s name, description, target audience (buyer persona), and desired pitch length (1, 3, 5, or 10 minutes).

2. Pitch Forge generates:

A professionally written script tailored to investors.

A PPT deck designed for clarity and impact.

An audio pitch of the script with emphasis on key points to help you practice or even use directly.

Show HN: Periodic Table and Wordle = Elemendle - Project Screenshot

URL: https://elemendle.com/

Author: lyl_003

Description: Hey HN, I've been working on a little side project - a daily guessing game called Elemendle. It's similar to Wordle, but instead of guessing a word, you guess a chemical element. You get hints based on various properties like its place on the periodic table (Period, Group, Block), Type (e.g., Transition Metal, Noble Gas), Phase (Solid, Liquid, Gas), atomic number and mass.

I'm sharing it here because I'm curious what you think of it. Let me know if you enjoy it or have ideas for improvements.

8. Show HN: ReProm – CLI to bundle code and structure into one Markdown for AI

Show HN: ReProm – CLI to bundle code and structure into one Markdown for AI - Project Screenshot

URL: https://github.com/KeisukeNagakawa/reprom

Author: ngkw

Description: Hi HN,

I built ReProm ([GitHub](https://github.com/keisukenagakawa/reprom)) as a simple command-line tool for anyone who’s ever needed to share a bunch of files (and their folder structure) with AI tools like ChatGPT. It automatically scans the folders you specify, grabs all your target files, and merges them into one Markdown file — complete with a directory tree and the file contents. You can also copy it into clipboard.

Motivation:

  • Tired of copy-pasting entire file contents into chat windows
  • Wanted a single Markdown “package” that included both an overview and the code
  • Simplify debugging or code review with AI by providing it all at once

    Key Features:

  • Directory Tree: Generates a tree-like overview
  • File Contents: Collects file content into one Markdown
  • Pre/Post-Text: Optional sections for custom notes or instructions
  • Multiple Configs: Switch configurations easily in a single YAML file
  • Output: Save to a file or copy Markdown directly to the clipboard
  • Written in TypeScript, published under MIT

    Usage:

npm install --save-dev reprom
npx reprom --config=reprom.config.yaml --name=yourConfig

Or configure a script in package.json for repeated use.

Demo: It exports something like:

1. Custom “preText”
2. Directory structure
3. Individual file contents in code blocks
4. Custom “postText”
5. Usage statistics (character count)

Repo: [GitHub – keisukenagakawa/reprom](https://github.com/keisukenagakawa/reprom)

Would love feedback, suggestions, or contributions. Thanks for checking it out!

11. Show HN: Deploy Docker Containers Without Setting up/Managing an Infrastructure

Show HN: Deploy Docker Containers Without Setting up/Managing an Infrastructure - Project Screenshot

URL: https://dorch.cloud/

Author: qbqetell

Description: DOrch enables Engineers, Indie Hackers, and Startups to host a docker container (OCI-compatible containers at large), without having to set up or manage a container infrastructure. It comes with features like env variables management, file sharing, FREE subdomain issuance, TLS certificate management, and automatic restart, with more features in the pipeline. The console also allows you to view logs from your containers.

The product idea occurred to me about 18 months ago, while working at a different startup. The strategy of the CEO was, spray-and-pray: we created lots of products hoping one would take off. Despite being a small team working on many things, I would say we tried in terms of product quality. Our products weren't what I would consider Grade-A, engineering-wise, but they worked well for the most part. However, when it came to infrastructure, we couldn't say the same. We always had one or two things breaking every now and then.

Now, you would ask, why not just use Kubernetes. Well, we thought of that. But considering how small we were and how much workload we had, there was no way we could operate Kubernetes effectively. Yes, we could have also employed a managed Kubernetes solution, but for a startup which already spends a lot on core infrastructure, due to how many projects we operated, management wouldn't approve of a managed Kubernetes solution.

There are also solutions like Heroku. However, as a company where containers are our standard unit of deployment, and tries to avoid platforms that try to lock customers in, Heroku and its likes were also off the table.

Platforms like Render are definitely an option. But while there are many lovers of Render and similar products, we just did not like the experience. We are of the opinion that Render was doing too many things. We just wanted to deploy containers. We were not looking for a platform offering 101 ways to deploy, but instead, we wanted 1 standard and open way to deploy. In short, Render felt like trading one pain for another discomfort.

The solution we eventually settled for was to come up with a crude internal solution. After taking off a few months from product development entirely, with a couple of bash scripts, python scripts, and custom-built binaries, we were finally able to fortify our infrastructure, which held up for a while.

Even though we (temporarily) solved the problem, it got me thinking a lot. I came to the obvious realization that infrastructure isn't as perfect as we sometimes assume. There are still gaps in the infrastructure space and we just saw one of them. As someone who had been looking out for a problem to found a startup around, I soon began working on what would become DOrch today.

On Jan 8, I launched DOrch. While the Pro & Enterprise models are our destination, the basic model which is now out (https://DOrch.cloud/) for Engineers, Indie Hackers, and Startups, offers a peak into what the Pro & Enterprise models could offer. We are currently building on the back of AWS. Our long term goal also includes operating our own data centers ourselves. We hope we get there.

15. Show HN: The Neovim syntax tree traversal plugin you've been waiting for

Show HN: The Neovim syntax tree traversal plugin you've been waiting for - Project Screenshot

URL: https://github.com/aaronik/treewalker.nvim

Author: Aaronik

Description: Treewalker.nvim

For a while I'd been wanting a good syntax tree traversal and manipulation plugin for neovim. I tried stuff like treesitter-textobjects and syntax-tree-surfer but neither could meet my needs.

So I built the one I'd been wanting.

Introducing Treewalker.nvim (https://github.com/aaronik/treewalker.nvim). It offers movement and swapping. Design goals include stability and ergonomics.

Movement

* Up/down go to neighbor nodes up/down in the document.

* Left goes to the parent node

* Right goes to next found indent in the document

Each has their own spin on a literal tree movement. The ultimate goel is to make the movement feel ergonomic, not to strictly adhere to the AST.

Swapping

* Up/down swaps take the highest node on the line and its comments, decorators, and annotations. This makes it easy to swap things like route handlers. These swaps operate on whole lines.

* Left/right swaps operate on the node under the cursor. This is good for swapping arguments and list items.

The plugin aims to be stable - it's well tested and leverages types with luacheck in the CI. There are few options. It's meant to "just work".

Ok that's all, I hope this can be of some use to folks!

16. Show HN: [Early Access] Seen – A fast, minimal Google Keep alternative

URL: #

Author: _bittere

Description: Hello HN! Seen is a very minimal, and currently WIP Google Keep alternative. Seen lets you create little "cards" with Markdown that you can search and edit. Seen is very basic right now, but contains all the basic functionality you would expect. There's no sharing/downloads, no pins, no tags - nothing. But it's all planned! Seen is not open-source right now either. My plan is to build out Seen with your (yes, your) feedback to make it perfect. It's a little side project of mine, not a full-blown SaaS with pricing and stuff. If you're interested in using Seen (and it's completely free), drop an email in the address here: https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=_bittere

A little about me: I'm a 16 year old who's really interested in building all things web/design. I've built a few projects before, but none that I've shared with the world. Check out my dribble: https://dribbble.com/bittere

Thank you!

17. Show HN: DataTig, crowd source a data set in a Git repository

Show HN: DataTig, crowd source a data set in a Git repository - Project Screenshot

URL: https://www.datatig.com/

Author: jarofgreen

Description: Hello HN!

DataTig is an Open Source tool for when a community of people want to crowd source a data set and they use a git repository to store the data.

Lots of people do this combined with a static site builder. This results in a nice website with easy ways to manage and contribute data.

With DataTig you add a config file then the tool can provide web forms, data exports, data information, quality checks, history information ... it also works with MarkDown files with YAML headers so you can use it with a static site blogging tool like Jekyll.

More info on the website: https://www.datatig.com/

I recently wrote up a talk that lists some people doing this and goes into the question of whether this is a good idea to do or not: https://www.datatig.com/2024/12/24/talk.html

Have a look, and please say if you know of a project that does this.

Thanks, James

21. Show HN: Terraform Provider for Inexpensive Switches

Show HN: Terraform Provider for Inexpensive Switches - Project Screenshot

URL: https://github.com/brennoo/terraform-provider-hrui

Author: brennoo

Description: Hi HN,

I’ve been building this provider for (web managed) network switches manufactured by HRUI. These switches often used in SMBs, home labs, and by budget-conscious enthusiasts. Many HRUI switches are also rebranded and sold under various OEM/ODM names (eg. Horaco, XikeStor, keepLiNK, Sodola, etc) making them accessible/popular but often overlooked in the world of infrastructure automation.

The provider is in pre-release, and I’m looking for owners of these switches to test it and share feedback. My goal is to make it easier to automate its config using Terraform/OpenTofu :)

You can use this provider to configure VLANs, port settings, trunk/link aggregation etc.

I built this provider to address the lack of automation tools for budget-friendly hardware. It leverage goquery and has an internal SDK sitting between the Terraform resources and the switch Web UI.

If you have one of these switches, I’d love for you to give it a try and let me know how it works for you!

    Terraform Registry: https://registry.terraform.io/providers/brennoo/hrui
    OpenTofu Provider: https://search.opentofu.org/provider/brennoo/hrui
I’m happy to answer any questions about the provider or the hardware it supports. Feedback, bug reports, and ideas for improvement are more than welcome!

22. Show HN: Hackslash.org Slashdot-esque AI summaries/tags of HN posts

Show HN: Hackslash.org Slashdot-esque AI summaries/tags of HN posts - Project Screenshot

URL: https://hackslash.org/stories/

Author: unknown_user_84

Description: I've been working on this for a little bit and just got the site up off my own dev machine today. This is a site that uses the Gemini API to summarize HN posts and comments using Gemini 1.5 pro. It also tags stories using the Gemini API. Tags can be browsed for all stories that have that tag. All the tags annotated with the number of stories that have that tag are browsable. The web application portion is written in Django, backed by a Postgres database, served by gunicorn and ultimately pushed out through an nginx reverse proxy. I ended up making this because it was something that I wanted, I'm an old Slashdot nerd, always reading the stories and never the comments. I like HN, and the comment threads here, and wondered one day what it would be like to get Gemini to summarize posts in a way similar to Slashdot.

I don't have any plans to charge for the site. I will probably only have it pull stories once or twice a day to keep the API costs down. There are five API hits per story, verbose summaries (story and comments), tldr summaries (story and comments), and tags. Right now I've got a python script separate from the Django application that does all the interacting with the HN api (which is very nice by the way), the Gemini API, and the Postgres database. I ended up using the Gemini 1.5 pro model to do the summaries as it seems to have access to the Internet, while the other model I tried do not. Getting the model to consistently output JSON for the tags was a bit tricky, until I asked Gemini itself to fix up the prompt for consistently generating JSON. Now it seems to output valid JSON every time without a JSON prefix.

I have noticed that Gemini likes to hallucinate when it comes to the comments, I have it just about ironed out for the story URLs. Mostly when there are few or no comments it seems to summarize like the comments it expects to be there. I'll probably keep tweaking the prompts, and if there's interest demonstrated on Patreon I'll take some polls there of new features to add. I might add more summary types, Gemini seems to do an alright job when I tell it to critique an article but I haven't looked into that too deeply and I have a hunch it might start to hallucinate more. Setting up a personalized page with tag filtering might be an interesting thing to add.

Regardless, I hope you find it interesting. I'm personally curious which tags will end up with the most stories after I have it running for about a month or so. Questions and critiques welcome!

Show HN: Surfer a browser that blocks the many of the most visited websites - Project Screenshot

URL: https://raytopia.itch.io/surfer

Author: raytopia

Description: I've had an idea for a while of a web browser that blocks the world's most popular websites as I've gotten very tired of spending a lot of time on the same select few and was missing the days when I used to explore and surf the web.

So last weekend when I found one of Qt's Pyside based web browser examples I decide to actually build out the idea as a fun little project.

Now as for Surfer itself the landing page is marginalia-search but I've also have bookmarks to wiby.me and neocities to help kickstart exploring.

While not the most cutting edge it is fun to use because as it breaks up the habit of visiting the same few websites everyday.

Let me know if you have any questions, know of any other good websites to have bookmarked by default, or have any simple features that you think would improve it.
