3. Show HN: LogLayer – Unified logger that routes logs to various logging libraries
Author: theogravity
Description: As a longtime TypeScript/Node.js developer, I've often faced challenges with logging—choosing, using, and maintaining the right logger for various projects. While most loggers offer the usual methods like "info", "warn", and "error", they vary significantly in how they handle structured metadata or Error objects. This can lead to ad-hoc solutions, like serializing errors or writing custom pipelines, just to get logs formatted correctly.
I built LogLayer to address these pain points by introducing a fluid, expressive API. With methods like "withMetadata" and "withError", LogLayer separates object injection from the log message itself, making your logging code both cleaner and more maintainable.
Logs are processed through a LogLayer Transport, which acts as an adapter for your preferred logging library. This design offers several key advantages:
- Multi-Transport Support: Send logs to multiple destinations (e.g., DataDog and New Relic) simultaneously. I've personally used this feature to ship logs directly to DataDog without relying on their APM package or sidecars.
- Easy Logger Swapping: If you’ve ever used Pino with Next.js, you might have encountered issues where it doesn’t work out of the box after a production build without webpack hacks. With LogLayer, you can swap in a better-suited library without touching your logging code.
I spent a good few months on and off and used my winter break to launch version 5 of LogLayer, and also created the documentation using Vitepress.
LogLayer has been battle-tested in production at Airtop (https://airtop.ai), where it’s been an integral part of our systems for years (we were running as Switchboard for almost four years and pivoted late last year).
(Disclaimer: I work at Airtop, but LogLayer is not sponsored / affiliated with them.)

4. Show HN: I built a tool to rank cities based on purchasing power for SWEs
URL: https://www.techcities.app/?baseCity=sf
Author: mohamed3on
Description: Show HN: I built a tool to calculate real tech salaries across cities (after tax & COL)
As a software engineer obsessed with data-driven decisions, I wanted to quantify how much better/worse other cities would be compared to my current home in Berlin. While sites like Glassdoor and levels.fyi tell you how much you can earn, they don't show what you actually keep after taxes and living costs.
So I built Tech City Index - a tool that compares cities based on actual purchasing power for software engineers, combining:
* Real-time salary data from levels.fyi
* Cost of living data from Numbeo
* Local tax calculations at median tech income (thanks, GPT-4o)
* Weather data (naturally)
Some surprising findings:
1. Seattle and Austin top the list (ahead of SF) due to:
* Similar tech salaries to SF
* No state income tax (vs California's 13.3%)
* Significantly lower housing costs
2. The top rankings are unsurprisingly dominated by the US, which is still by far the best place for a SWE to be. Even an engineer working in the middle of nowhere (no disrespect, Kansas City) has 42% more purchasing power than their London counterpart, thanks to:
* Access to US-only remote jobs
* 32% lower cost of living
* Lower tax rates
3. Western Europe significantly underperforms both US and Middle East markets. A Milan-based SWE:
* Earns 54% less than in Abu Dhabi
* Pays 38% in taxes (vs 0% in UAE)
* Faces 11% higher living costs
The tool includes a "salary converter" - input your current compensation and family size (e.g., number of kids needing childcare), and it calculates the equivalent salary needed in any target city to maintain your standard of living.

Built with Cursor and Next.js

5. Show HN: E-Paper Life Organizer with Pico and Inky Frame
URL: https://github.com/jaeheonshim/inky-dashboard
Author: jaeheonshim
Description: I made a desktop e paper display to show my calendar and to-do list to help keep me organized in college. Full source code available here: https://github.com/jaeheonshim/inky-dashboard
The display is only awoken from deep sleep mode every 30 minutes to update the information, allowing the frame to be fully battery powered. You can link your Todoist for the to-do items on the left, and you can link any calendar in iCal format (Google Calendar, Outlook, etc.) for the calendar on the right. The code can be fully customized to display just the calendar, just the to-do list, or a mix of both. Let me know if you have any ideas for what features I should add next!

6. Show HN: Generate .env files from various secret providers via checked-in config
URL: https://github.com/auth70/salakala
Author: miunau
Description: Hi! I've been frustrated with the secret sharing situation in serverside javascript land for a while; the common thing is to just toss .env files around on Slack to get someone's app working, or involves some kind of convoluted setup to get a blob from a storage and turn it into environment variables via commands I have to copy paste every time.
But everyone uses secret storage providers, e.g. shared password vaults, cloud secrets, etc., so why not leverage those as URIs in a JSON file that can be checked in to source control? I want something simple that would just generate the darn .env file with the secrets, and log me in the process if need be.
Something like..
{
"SECRET_ENV_VALUE": "op://application-secrets/test/test-section",
"SECRET_ENV_VALUE2": "gcsm://projects/1234567890/secrets/SOME_KEY/versions/latest"
}
Surprisingly I wasn't able to find anything exactly like this (most seem to want to sell me something centralised on their servers instead), so I made it. It's still quite early but I've made providers for:- 1password (via CLI)
- AWS Secret Manager (via nodejs)
- Azure Key Vault (via nodejs)
- Bitwarden (via CLI)
- Doppler (via CLI)
- Github Secrets (via CLI)
- Google Cloud Secret Manager (via nodejs)
- Hashicorp Vault (via nodejs)
- Infisical (via CLI)
- KeePass (via CLI)
- LastPass (via CLI)
It can handle binary data from the providers that can store some, encoding it as base64 in the .env file. It tries to be nice to JSON as well.
Some (read most) of these need help testing out, so if you're interested feel free to come in to kick the tires and raise issues :)
The providers will try to log you in (or guide you through the process) if you are not, so any help making that even nicer is appreciated!

9. Show HN: Does your food have gluten?
URL: https://www.glutenchecker.link/
Author: zeroentropylabs
Description: Hey folks!
About a couple of months or so ago, I finally figured out I’m gluten intolerant after months of chasing random symptoms and getting nowhere. After a wild goose chase (started this via Djokovic's Serve To Win book) finally found out I was highly gluten sensitive/intolerant.
I had to rethink everything I ate. Grocery shopping turned into ingredient detective work, and eating out became a gamble. I quickly realized I needed something to make this easier and built GlutenAI. It’s a super simple tool to check if something’s gluten-free. Type in a food or product or even a common recipe name, and it’ll let you know if you’re good to go or should steer clear.
Would love to get y'all's feedback on this and let me know what else you would like to see here : https://www.glutenchecker.link/

13. Show HN: What if you could directly pay GitHub contributors?
URL: https://www.bountyhub.dev/en
Author: omarsoufiane
Description: Hello HN community! As a long-time Github user, I often had issues with public repositories that remained open for a long time. This is due to multiple reasons, such as the lack of resources or prioritization. Sponsoring a repository isn't always the best idea because most of the time, contributors are not the ones receiving money. I came up with a solution: put bounties on GitHub issues to incentivize open-source contributors to fix issues even if they're not directly affected by them.
This tool is not intended to force any unwanted additions to a GitHub project, but mainly to help with fixing bugs. Additionally, we require that bounty creators ask repository maintainers for approval for feature requests (in the case where bounty creators are not the repository maintainers). Bountyhub has been running for a couple of months and we did make a positive impact on a few GitHub repositories.
I'll be happy to answer any question on the subject, thank you for your time.

14. Show HN: GeoDownloader – A tool for downloading OpenStreetMap data easily
URL: https://geodownloader.com/
Author: mtrcn
Description: After finding it tedious to download specific OpenStreetMap data for my small projects, I built GeoDownloader (https://geodownloader.com) to make the process visual and simple. The biggest pain points I wanted to solve:
- Having to use complex Overpass queries for basic OSM data downloads
- Needing programming knowledge or GIS knowledge (for using available GIS apps) to get specific map data
- Most importantly; lack of visual feedback and allowing to select specific features before downloading
What it does:
- Draw areas on a map to select regions (no queries needed)
- Visual tag selector for OSM data types
- Live preview of selected data
- Export to GeoJSON, GeoPackage or ESRI Shapefile (feel free to suggest other file formats)
- Free to use (for up to 100 features, and there is a small fee for up to 10k features)
The goal was to make OpenStreetMap data accessible to everyone, not just developers or GIS professionals.
I'd love feedback from the HN community, especially if you work with OpenStreetMap data. What features would make this more useful for your workflow?

15. Show HN: GNC Trainer – A Landing Simulator for Tinkering with Control Systems
URL: https://www.thomasantony.com/gnc-trainer/
Author: tantony
Description: I built a small game where you write control algorithms to land a spacecraft in increasingly challenging scenarios.
The game starts simple - just control vertical thrust to hover. Later levels introduce rotational dynamics, thrust vectoring, and 2D movement. Each level saves your working solution for reference. The user input to be written using Rhai-script (https://rhai.rs/).
Note that it is a bit heavy at ~38MiB and may not work well on mobile.
Try it at: https://www.thomasantony.com/gnc-trainer/ Code: https://github.com/thomasantony/gnc-trainer/
The code can also be built natively and run directly on your machine.
This is something I hack on at random times and so feedback is welcome for things I can add/change. As time permits, I'm considering adding levels for more advanced concepts like precision landing and state estimation (including atmospheric flight).

16. Show HN: Friendlyfriends.community
URL: https://friendlyfriends.community
Author: projproj
Description: I'm exploring the idea that social media is not really social. How much different is it to interact with chatbots than it is to intermediate our human interactions through social media?
The name is an homage to Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, which asks (and maybe answers?) similar questions. How much "like a human" is enough? Do we care in the end?
friendlyfriends uses LLMs that are probably not really human enough to answer these questions, but I'm giving it a shot anyways.

17. Show HN: From WordPress to Hugo+Isso
URL: https://gioorgi.com/2024/liberta-come-aria/
Author: daitangio
Description: There has been a series of unfortunate events involving Wordpress recently.
Initially, I only followed the issue tangentially, also because I have always considered myself a mere "end user" of Wordpress, even if long-time one (I used it for about 20 years).
For me, the fact that Wordpress.com sold a service based on an "extended" version of Wordpress.org was never a particular problem, but I never thought it was illegal to compete directly with it by taking the open source software and offering a simple hosting service.
Anyway I started to consider to switch from Wordpress to a static site hosted with hugo, retaining the comment system and all the URLs in the original form, more or less.
I was surprised because it took very little time (less 1 week of total work) to migrate my articles (1000+) and the comments.
I used open source tools, and I am a "hugo" newbie, so I make some trade off too.
Neverless, let me know what do you think and if you want more details on how I migrated it (HN loves static site, I know it :).

20. Show HN: Reminder – Ask the Quran Questions Using RAG and OpenAI
URL: https://reminder.dev
Author: asim
Description: Hey all
I started working on something that would enable me to use llms to ask questions to the Quran and related texts. I didn't have much prior exposure to AI. Except for some usage of chatgpt and the API. I'd be curious to get some feedback. I pre-built an index of embeddings for the Quran, Hadith (bukhari) and names of Allah. Any question first queries the index to create a context that's then fed in for the actual question. I think there's still significant tweaking required, but I'm learning something doing it so I thought it might be interesting to share.

28. Show HN: I Finally Shipped My First Real Product – Timesible
URL: https://timesible.io
Author: Gaasre
Description: Hi, I'm a developer, and after years of experimenting with various ideas, I finally shipped and reached a satisfaction point with my product. It’s called Timesible — a time tracking and project management tool designed to help businesses and teams optimize their productivity.
Over the years, I’ve built plenty of projects, but most of them never reached the finish line or died out pretty early. This time, however, I wanted to build something truly useful. I decided to create a product that offers a simple, all-in-one solution to track time, manage tasks, and keep everything on budget.
The idea came from my own frustration with existing tools that felt either too complex or disconnected. I wanted a product that felt intuitive and streamlined, so I focused on making Timesible as easy to use as possible, with powerful features like time tracking, team management, project cost analysis, and invoicing — all in one platform.
My wife and I use Timesible every day for our own projects, and it’s been amazing to see how much it helped us stay organized and productive. I’m humbled that it’s already getting some attention and being used by others who are finding it just as valuable.
If you're a team or business looking to improve your time management and project workflow, I’d love for you to give Timesible a try. It’s been a labor of love, and I’m excited to keep improving it.

30. Show HN: Ashtar Is a Task Interface (TI) for AI
URL: https://asht.ar
Author: chadsix
Description: Chat interfaces help to display the ability of LLMs, but by and large the best uses have been refined cases such as code editors among others.
I believe that LLMs are a massively useful tool -- and the usefulness is unlocked by the power of the wielder/user.
In order to help people unlock the best outcomes from LLM, I felt it was necessary to build a Task Interface that the LLM would output thereon, thus moving from just chatting about things to doing things and marking progress.
Further, by segregating parts of projects into separate silos, it helps to increase context awareness giving better text completions (answers) in the many tests I have conducted.
I believe Ashtar unlocks the potential of human + AI in terms of helping the human achieve his/her dreams.
I hope you like it and it helps you unlock your potential!
Please let me know your thoughts, negative or positive!
Thank you for taking the time and happy new year HN!

URL: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/sidecar-preview-by-autoal/fmdfgdonhkjpdigljddfpgeokdmnehpf
Author: swoopuser
Description: Hey HN,
We’ve been working on a Chrome extension called Sidecar, designed to make browsing safer and more informed by providing fact-checking, bias detection, and toxicity analysis for AI chats and web content (on any website).
The idea:
With the rise of generative AI and vast online content, misinformation, bias, and harmful content seem to be everywhere. Sidecar acts as a companion to verify information in real-time.
When you highlight text on a webpage, the Sidecar pigeon icon appears, giving you quick access to fact-checks, bias detection, and context.
Here’s what Sidecar can do:
Instant Verification: Highlight content or click Sidecar to check for inaccuracies, receiving a sourced, accurate breakdown.
Bias Detection: Understand content through ratings for bias (political, age, gender) and toxicity.
Interactive Corrections: Rewrite or fix inaccurate text based on Sidecar’s analysis.
Compatibility: Works with major AI models like ChatGPT.
We’d love for you to try it out! You can download Sidecar from the Chrome Web Store (https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/sidecar-preview-by-...).

35. Show HN: We built a platform for language learning with AI
Author: RyanLiebregts
Description: Hi HN!
We're Ryan and Dre, engineers who built Scena, a platform for creating and sharing interactive AI personas.
While learning Dutch and Spanish, we found language apps focused on gamification but lacked real conversation practice. So we built tools for users to create and share their own AI conversation partners.
The tech stack uses Azure speech services and fine-tuned GPT 4o mini, with a Swift frontend and AWS backend. What makes us different is treating personas like YouTube, anyone can create and share them. Early users have created everything from language learning through murder mysteries to technical interview practice.
Everything is free and open to try. We'd love feedback, especially on scaling user generated AI content.

URL: https://github.com/sangddn/prompt_builder
Author: sangdoan
Description: I just released my first open-source project called Prompt Builder — it lets you add local files, fetch YouTube transcripts, fetch content from URLs, etc. to your LLM prompts.
I've found it super useful for long-context tasks like writing, coding, and casual research. Essentially any case where you have a bunch of material that you would like to inject into a prompt's context quickly.
There's also a lot of neat power-user features like web search, summarize a text before injecting (useful for condensing contexts that might be too long and/or distracting), transcribe local audio/video files, see exact token counts, reusable snippets with variables, etc.
Bring your own keys, local-first, and 100% open-source.
Just starting out so I would appreciate any feedback!

47. Show HN: A Crowdsourced Solar Forecasting and Benchmarking Platform
Author: muc-martin
Description: Hi HN,
I built PVBenchmark as a community-driven platform to forecast daily solar energy production and benchmark performance against real-world data from other systems. My hope is to give solar owners (or prospective owners) an easy way to see whether their system is performing optimally.
It features location-based forecasts: enter your location, panel orientation, tilt, and capacity to get projected production. It also includes crowdsourced benchmarks: compare your actual data to other users’ systems worldwide, helping you spot underperforming setups or confirm you’re running above average. Originally built for Germany, PVBenchmark now supports English and offers forecasts worldwide.
I’d love to hear your feedback on how to improve the forecasting approach and which metrics or comparisons would be most useful to you. Thanks for reading, and I look forward to your thoughts!

Description: The idea was to see how many days us as a community can solve!
I felt like the default Advent of Code leaderboard puts too much emphasis on individual competition, which I found unpleasant (it activates my ego too much ha).
It wound up being really fun!

51. Show HN: Xplore Path – Explore untidy data spread across scattered files/formats
URL: https://github.com/offbynull/xplore-path
Author: offbynull
Description: Xplore Path is a tool for quick-and-dirty data exploration, built for messy, untidy data scattered across files and formats.
* Simple syntax: Query data with an intuitive, XPath-like syntax.
* Broad format support: Search through CSVs, XLSXs, JSONs, YAMLs, DOCXs, PDFs, XMLs, HTMLs, ...
* Fuzzy search support: Search using globs, regex, number ranges, or approximate string matching.
* Unified environment: Search through disparate files and formats within a single context.
* Extendable: Add functions and formats to customize to your use case (e.g. 3D scene graphs, flow cytometry, ...).
Xplore Path aims to be the first tool you reach for when inspecting / exploring new data "thrown over the fence" by a colleague or partner. Imagine receiving a zip file containing a nested directory structure full of cryptically named CSVs, XLSXs, PDFs, JSONs, HTMLs, and maybe even a SQLite database. Instead of hopping between tools or libraries to piece it all together, Xplore Path loads everything as a hierarchy and lets you search it with XPath-like simplicity. You can explore, slice, and integrate data with an easy to use REPL that provides auto-completion.
The GitHub link has instructions on getting started. Please take a look and let me know your thoughts. I wrote Xplore Path over the holiday break becauause the scenario above is one I've commonly experienced throughout my career, especially when dealing with third parties (e.g. university labs and CROs).
The project is functional but still rough around the edges. Here's what needs ironing out:
* Language grammar needs to be tightened up.
* More exhaustive testing.
* More exhaustive documentation (both code documentation and user documentation).
* Squeezing more speed (joins are especially slow).
* Some formats need better support / more formats need to be supported.
* Some formats need functionality added to allow the user to transform how the hierarchy gets loaded.
The first item (grammar design) is the one I'm most inexperienced with. If any language design experts have time to kill, please feel free to review and make suggestions.
