1. Show HN: FixBrowser – a lightweight web browser created from scratch

Show HN: FixBrowser – a lightweight web browser created from scratch - Project Screenshot

URL: https://www.fixbrowser.org/

Author: jezek2

Description: Hello, I'm working on a web browser that focuses on being truly lightweight and designed for privacy.

At some point I've realized that much of the complexity and resource requirements of web browsers comes from JavaScript. This is because every part needs to be dynamic and optimized for speed.

So a few years ago I've started to work on a web browser that intentionally doesn't implement JavaScript, instead it contains an updated set of scripts that fix and improve various websites.

I've been using this approach using a proxy server for a few years as my primary way of web browsing with good results. It uses a whitelist approach where no resources are loaded from different domains by default (the fix scripts can override it to load images from CDNs, etc.). This avoids any trackers by default.

You can find more details on the homepage of the project:

https://www.fixbrowser.org/

I'm currently running a fundraiser to get it really going. All the foundation blocks are there it just needs some more work. Any support is welcome.

Description: Hi HN! I brought my favorite game from Palm OS to the web as a hobby project. In Space Trader, you can trade goods, hunt bounties, amass a fortune, buy a moon and retire.

One of the parts of this project I enjoyed the most:

To aid debugging and unit testing, I use a deterministic random number generator called GameRand. In debug mode, I can capture the random seed and log of every action taken in the game. Then I can replay that to reproduce a bug or create a test.

I ended up creating nearly exhaustive test coverage this way.

Description: Got bored today so I created this little companion site for my main VPN setup blog page to help people who are not tech-savvy quickly know whether their network can support hosting a VPN server (ex. WireGuard).

It basically checks if it's public/private and if it's from a cellular network. Also tries to distinguish between Verizon 5G Home or AT&T Fiber which are not the same as cellular and should still work for hosting a VPN.

Show HN: BabyStepsJs – Interactive Skill Tree for Babies in a Single HTML File - Project Screenshot

URL: https://github.com/cs-util-com/BabyStepsJs

Author: csutil-com

Description: Hi HN,

I built BabyStepsJs to track the development of my newborn daughter in the form of a skill tree. It’s a mix of gamified documentation of her current progress and a bit of education on what she might discover next. I conducted a similar development experiment a few months ago with the same rules (see the cs-util-com/InstantScribe repo):

- Act mainly as the PM and QA for the AI (this time ChatGPT-o1) and iteratively add user stories and requirements to extend the feature set.

- Each iteration was typically a single commit, so the AI’s proposed changes were easy to review in the git diff.

- I generally did not modify the code much myself, only making minor adjustments like tweaking colors, positions, etc.

- I also made some initial high-level decisions, such as choosing D3 for the graph.

Some findings/impressions from that process:

- I was able to prototype this in a few hours. The process was fun and allowed me to change requirements as I learned more about what I wanted.

- Most of the changes were correct on the first try (using o1). With other models, I often noticed more random changes in unrelated parts of the app.

- o1 tends to strip comments, even when they provide useful context on what the code does.

- Some ideas (e.g. how to smartly arrange the graph) were suggestions o1 came up with on its own. It was often worth specifying the requirements more on the "why" and less on the "how", giving the AI the freedom to propose solutions I might not have considered.

- More complex requirements were sometimes ignored for a while when they were just part of the "user stories" comment block at the top of the HTML file. Only after explicitly pointing out that they weren’t implemented did the AI make an effort to address them.

In summary, I’m excited to continue exploring this development approach over the coming years to see if increasingly complex applications can be built iteratively in this way.

7. Show HN: IsMyAIDown – AI status monitor with Phoenix LiveView. Can you crash it?

Show HN: IsMyAIDown – AI status monitor with Phoenix LiveView. Can you crash it? - Project Screenshot

URL: https://ismyaidown.com

Author: ryandaigle

Description: I recently built IsMyAIDown.com to challenge some assumptions about modern web development. Instead of reaching for React like everyone else seems to be doing these days, I wanted to see if I could build a distributed, scalable, real-time, single-page app using server-side tech with Phoenix and LiveView.

The core idea was simple enough - monitor major AI providers and show their status across different geographic regions. But the primary goal was to better understand what was possible without the complexity of modern frontend frameworks.

I ended up deploying across three Fly.io regions and using Oban (a very good job processing library in the Elixir ecosystem) to handle geographically distributed health checks. Propogating new checks and detecting and tracking user presence was all quite straightforward. Phoenix is a great framework.

That said, the mental model with LiveView is... a lot. You've got to keep track of a variety of message callbacks that all seem to run together in my head (mount, handle_info, handle_update, handle_params, etc) as well as a heirarchy of views and components that all interact with each other. Even for a relatively simple site like this, it's a lot to hold in your head at once and I found myself having to re-study the flow a few times to get my head around what was going on (surely a personal failing, but a thing none the less). I would not say that LiveView is for beginners.

While I haven't optimized the site much at all, I'd love to see how even this basic implementation holds up under increased load, so do your best HN.

Some side-thoughts on modern software dev: Using Cursor definitely made me more productive but I found myself becoming weirdly disconnected from parts of the codebase that I hadn't written myself. There's something about that line-by-line writing process that builds up your mental map in a way that AI-generated code doesn't quite match. As the size of a system grows, I wonder if AI-generated code will help or hinder?

Quick note on the various AI providers I'm monitoring – OpenAI and Google seem to be the fastest and most reliably available while Anthropic is a bit slower and much more prone to API call failures.

Some resources that I found quite helpful:

9. Show HN: Gemini-Powered Contextual Text Editor with Inline Diffing View

Show HN: Gemini-Powered Contextual Text Editor with Inline Diffing View - Project Screenshot

URL: https://ai-writing-tool.vercel.app/

Author: ynh

Description: Hey Hacker News,

I'm excited to share an early prototype of an AI-powered editor that leverages context for improved text generation and refinement. By providing notes, links, and other relevant information, you guide the AI, leading to more useful outputs. This editor is designed around my workflow, where I frequently use LLMs to refine my writing. I found myself spending a lot of time copying context into chatbot UIs and then copying the results back into my documents. This editor prototype aims to make using LLMs for writing more intuitive and streamlined, addressing the inefficiencies of copying context between different interfaces and comparing text.

This project is still in its early stages, and I'm looking for feedback. How could this be improved? What features are missing? Let me know in the comments.

Author: zynovex

Description: I made this classic looking text only search engine(sorry if that's overexaggerating) where you can get concise and straightforward results with sources. There are 5 prefixes right now.

It is a prototype kinda thing right now. I am busy for my upcoming exams. So, I would appreciate if anyone is interested to contribute.

I am currently using Gemini for this project. If anyone can implement better api's and improve code and the features it would be great help.

It's generating fake source links right now, the search is slow, prefixes like weather and time needs to be fixed using api's related to weather and time cause gemini can't give the current time and weather of any place. Pdf resources its giving are fake and do not exist.

Let me know what more I can add here. Or directly contribute by yourself.

26. Show HN: I Built My First Web App: Life on Track – A Gamified Habit Tracker

Show HN: I Built My First Web App: Life on Track – A Gamified Habit Tracker - Project Screenshot

URL: https://lifeontrack.co/

Author: kaannn

Description: Hey HN,

I recently launched my first web app, Life on Track, and I wanted to share my experience building it, along with some lessons learned. The app is designed to help people track habits and routines in a more engaging way, inspired by the pixel tables often seen in bullet journals.

Why I Built Life on Track: The idea came from my girlfriend's bullet journal. I loved the look of pixel tables for tracking habits but realized how tedious it was to create and update them manually. After seeing how many people enjoy this kind of tracking, I thought: What if this could be digitized and gamified?

What Makes It Different: Unlike many habit trackers that focus on binary results (e.g., "Did you drink water today? Yes/No"), Life on Track offers:

Customizable Pixel Tables - Track habits with nuanced data. For instance, instead of Yes/No for water intake, you can track exactly how many glasses you drank each day. Virtual Journaling - A customizable digital journal where you can decorate pages with stickers earned through achievements or daily streaks and share them with friends. Tech Stack and Lessons Learned I built Life on Track using:

Frontend: React, TypeScript, TailwindCSS Backend: Express.js Database: MongoDB Key lessons from the process:

Web-first challenges: Building for the web involved dealing with cross-browser compatibility, CORS, and responsive design, which added complexity and slowed me down. Feature creep: I underestimated how ideas would snowball during development. Next time, I’d focus on a minimal viable product (MVP) and add features later. User feedback is gold: I wish I’d started engaging potential users earlier to validate the idea and iterate faster. What’s Next My priority is collecting feedback from early users to guide future development. A mobile app version is also in the works.

If you're into habit tracking, productivity tools, or just want to see the app in action, feel free to check it out: Life on Track. I’d love to hear your thoughts, feedback, or suggestions!

27. Show HN: Adding Python Plugin support to my AI app Llama Run to automate your PC

URL: #

Author: KrishBaidya

Description: I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on—an assistant app called Llama Run. I initially built it to do simple tasks on my PC (change settings, perform automation, etc.), but as the project evolved, I became interested in making it extensible with Python Plugin support. Here's the backstory: While researching automation libraries, I came across PyAutoGUI, which allows you to control your PC through Python (moving the mouse, typing, clicking, etc.). It got me thinking about the potential of combining Python's flexibility with event-driven automation inside my app. Later, I found a GitHub repo that combined PyAutoGUI and OpenAI API for automation—this inspired me to give users the ability to create and run custom Python scripts directly in Llama Run.

How it works: I’m integrating Python through the CPython API alongside C++, allowing the app to run Python scripts dynamically. The plugin system will allow users to write Python code to interact with the app and automate their own workflows. By using a plugin system, I’m also keeping the app's core logic separate from custom user functionalities. I’m still developing this feature, but I’d love feedback or suggestions from the HN community. I’m eager to discuss the process and gather ideas on how to make this even better. In the meantime, if you're interested, here’s the Microsoft Store link: [https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9NW950ZX02CQ?hl=en-us&gl=I...] (This doesn't support the plugin system).

28. Show HN: Ayapo – A Browser with Social Features (Built with Replyke)

URL: #

Author: Yantsa

Description: Hi HN,

I’ve built a new browser that adds a social layer to the web. Every website can be upvoted, downvoted, or commented on, making it easier to gauge trustworthiness or discover niche sites, like back in the days. The home feed works like Reddit, letting users explore websites sorted by hot, top, new or controversial.

The idea came from wanting to make the web more transparent and also exciting again.

Technically, I built Ayapo using Replyke, which is a service I created to simplify building social apps for React & React Native. Replyke handled all the core features like feeds, comments, votes, in-app notifications, bookmarks and user management, letting me focus on what makes Ayapo unique and also on the UI.

Would love to hear your thoughts and feedback.

That said - Replyke is my main focus - Ayapo is simply a showcase of what Replyke can do. I plan to onboard some first developers to try out Replyke in a few weeks. If you think you can find use to the system I'd appreciate a sign up in the form I've setup over here so I can get in touch https://replyke.com

To be clear, Replyke work perfectly fine and securely even if you already have user system in place, and just want to add the social features.

32. Show HN: I Built an AI-Powered Form Generator (Instant Forms from a Prompt)

Show HN: I Built an AI-Powered Form Generator (Instant Forms from a Prompt) - Project Screenshot

URL: https://www.nexform.io/

Author: SK3PS

Description: Hi HN, I was an officer in a student organization and found myself constantly creating forms and surveys for events, signups, and feedback. It was a pain setting up questions, making sure the form was structured correctly, then generating links, and sometimes QR codes for offline sharing. So, I built an AI-powered form generator that creates entire forms (with short links and QR codes) based on a simple prompt or description. Right now, the product can:

  • Generate a complete form or survey from a short prompt.
  • Automatically produce QR codes and short links for easier sharing.
  • Provide quick and tidy analytics using ai if you want to track responses. I’d love for you to give it a try and let me know what you think. Feedback—especially from early adopters—is super valuable. Any bug reports, feature requests, or general comments would help me shape the product as it grows. Thanks for reading, and I hope you find it useful! Feel free to ask any questions or share your thoughts. Thank you

Show HN: A Clipboard manager for macOS which also suppports images - Project Screenshot

URL: https://github.com/workhunters/clipboard-core/releases/tag/v1.2.2

Author: hp77

Description: Hi everyone, I have been meaning to create something which can help me store not just clips of text but also of images(small files are also supported but not tested). Introducing rockstar-clipboard manager, it can save clippings of your text, images and can help you sync those with Obsidian if you are like me who wants to review some of the copied content from time to time. It also comes with a notification sound on copy feature which triggers a sound everytime you make a copy, so that you are aware that tool really did copy. This is for macos only atm, I got to know that Windows supports clipboard manager by default so I will not proceed with that, For linux, I will have to research on how I can do that. Looking forward to hearing from you.

36. Show HN: I built a resonance-based aptitude test that simulates job shadowing

Show HN: I built a resonance-based aptitude test that simulates job shadowing - Project Screenshot

URL: https://www.anewaptitude.com

Author: imfinn

Description: Instead of using personality quizzes or abstract assessments, I built a platform that tests career aptitude by measuring how naturally different types of professional information "stick" in your mind.

The platform presents technical scenarios from various careers (complete with authentic industry language and processes), then tests retention to identify which fields resonate most strongly with the user's natural abilities.

------------------------------------

Natalie, Forensic Science Technician

A crime scene investigation involves recovering trace evidence that could help solve a burglary case. Natalie is utilizing an electrostatic dust print lifter to capture footwear impressions left on the floor. At this time, she is carefully applying the film to ensure even contact with the surface, preserving the impression for analysis in the lab. This procedure aids in establishing the presence and movement of individuals at the scene of the crime. Story 1 of 15

And the question (for this story) asked after all the stories are presented:

How does using an electrostatic dust print lifter assist in a burglary investigation?

A. Preserving footwear impressions for lab analysis to show the movement of individuals.

B. Cleaning the floor of the crime scene to enhance the appearance for photographs.

C. Ensuring all evidence is well-preserved by using advanced surface-cleaning techniques.

D. Identifying the type of flooring material used by analyzing the impression depth.

------------------------------------

The hypothesis is that our brains naturally engage with and retain information that aligns with our innate aptitudes. By exposing users to real-world job scenarios and measuring what they naturally remember, we can reveal potential career paths they might not have considered.
