9. Show HN: Shiddns a DNS learning experience in Python
URL: https://github.com/vvm2/shiddns
Author: vvm2
Description: Hi HN, as a learning experience, I created a small DNS resolver with blocking capabilities and resolution of local host names. There are already tons of good ad-blocking DNS implementations out there. And they do this much better than my implementation. Great examples are Blocky or pihole.
So when I set out to "play around", I looked at these projects and tried to modify them. Fortunately for them, but unfortunately for beginners, these are already quite far developed and complex projects. So impatient me set out to "quickly write something in Python". Almost two weekends later, I put in so much time that I thought I might as well share this for others to explore (and hopefully enjoy). I tried keeping things simple and without external dependencies. In the end it was a good experience but became much bigger than I intended.
So I hope you enjoy: https://github.com/vvm2/shiddns

10. Show HN: Forest Market – buy and sell goods with crypto
URL: https://www.forestmarket.net
Author: forrestzhong
Description: Hi everyone!
I began my crypto journey in 2020. Over the past four years, I've often wondered: why can't we buy goods with crypto as easily as we shop on eBay? Isn't crypto supposed to function as a medium of exchange?
After seeing multiple forum posts echoing my thoughts, I decided to take action. As a developer, I've built a marketplace with one clear goal: to provide a reliable platform where users can buy and sell goods with crypto. I believe that when you make something truly for yourself, you're likely creating something valuable for others too.
As of today, you can:
1. buy anything in the marketplace with crypto 2. sell any legal item and get paid in crypto 3. return products if you're unsatisfied and receive a full refund in crypto
We're still actively developing the platform, so we'd greatly appreciate any feedback and support.

15. Show HN: Mindapp – open-source thought organizer
URL: https://mindapp.cc/
Author: mileung
Description: Hi HN, I built my own note taking app that I've been using for several months at this point.
Before I used Apple Notes, but the search became really slow after adding too many notes. Then I used VSCode with Markdown and that worked for a couple years, but there was no streamlined way to share notes and I realized often times I would have a note that could be categorized under multiple files.
To solve this I made Mindapp. It has a tagging system that allows tags to be subsets of other tags so for example the "San Francisco" tag is a subset of the "Bay Area" and "City" tags - both of which branch out into their own subtags. It also has different spaces that you can store notes in so they can be public or private. Another cool feature is it uses public/private keys to publish under different personas and verify posts.
A demo of how I use it can be found at https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7263871...
and the source code at https://github.com/mileung/mindapp
I made it for my own needs first but I think it would be cool if I had other users. The main problem is in order to get all the features, the setup process requires the command line and I don't have the bandwidth to streamline that process atm.
Lastly, if you'd like to see more improvements to Mindapp, I submitted it to a hackathon and would appreciate it if you voted for it at https://hack.solidjs.com/submissions

Author: shivanijpatel
Description: I’ve built Hairoin Labs, a product that uses scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a combination of AI and hair experts to analyze hair health.
SEM uses electrons instead of light, and their wavelength is about 100,000 times smaller—this lets us see details like damaged cuticles, microfractures, porosity, and buildup at the nanometer scale.
It’s kind of like 23andMe, but for your hair. You get personalized insights and care recommendations based on both AI analysis and expert review.

19. Show HN: I Made a Ultra-Low Latency IP Geolocation API in Go
Author: Lukem121
Description: Hey!
I'm a solo developer having fun learning Go. I have a side hustle and wanted to implement currency localization. I could use existing IP databases, but hosting on serverless is slow. So I built my own.
I was surprised how fun it can be to use Go, and it's fast. Thankfully, Go's speed makes up for my dodgy code.
Anyway, I'd love to get some feedback on my website/API. After a few weeks of testing and losing money on ads, I'm confident it's very reliable.
This isn't a promo. It's basicly free (30k lookups/month), so there's no need to pay.
Any advice or tips on how to grow and what you would do differently?

20. Show HN: I built an app to help you get good startup ideas
URL: #
Author: elpookie
Description: After spending months building an AI chatbot no one used, I experienced myself first hand why most side projects fail: they solve problems no one has. Inspired by Paul Graham’s essay on getting startup ideas https://www.paulgraham.com/startupideas.html, I decided to stop chasing new technologies and wanted to start focusing on solving real problems I experience daily.
To make this process easier, I built FireUp. It’s a simple app that lets you log your daily annoyances and includes an AI to turn them into actionable startup ideas. By logging your daily annoyances you can easily spot recurring patterns and start side projects that solve them. The integrated AI feature let’s you select a certain annoyance and the AI will suggest potential MVPs, feasible for solo founders, and provides a starting point for validating ideas. You can also add new startup ideas manually if you don’t want to use any AI features.
As this is my first app, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Here’s the link: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fireup-ai-startup-generator/id...
If I notice many people are interested in this I will also launch an android version soon

27. Show HN: A Schema-First, Post Only Alternative to Restful API
URL: https://yizy.rootxsnowstudio.com
Author: whkelvin
Description: Hello HN,
I am a fan of schema-first API design. I’ve always built APIs by writing Open API Spec by hand and generating server models and client SDKs to get E2E type safety across my server and clients.
Writing the spec by hand is a painful process, and setting up CI/CD pipelines or CLIs to run code generation can be time-consuming. So I decided to build a POST request-based, RPC-like, non-Restful API format that treats schema-first design as the first class citizen.
My vision is a web app that allows a team of developers to write API spec in the browser with automatic version control. The app would re-generate code every time there is a change in the spec right in the browser for developers to copy and paste into their editor instantly. It will also provide a way to publish the generated code to some package registry for installations.
I’ve built a POC to showcase editing the spec and generating code in the browser, and I’d love to invite you all to try it out and leave your feedback!

35. Show HN: MyDuck Server – Supercharge MySQL and Postgres Analytics with DuckDB
URL: https://github.com/apecloud/myduckserver
Author: fanyang01
Description: Hello HN!
We're excited to announce MyDuck Server, an open-source project that seamlessly integrates the analytical power of DuckDB with your existing MySQL & Postgres databases.
Backstory
Currently, there are no fully satisfactory open-source OLAP solutions for MySQL & Postgres. In the MySQL ecosystem, HeatWave offers close integration, but it's a proprietary, commercial product from Oracle. The Postgres community has seen promising DuckDB-based extensions emerge, including the official pg_duckdb. However, extensions can introduce isolation concerns in mission-critical environments.
Consequently, many organizations resort to setting up complex and costly data movement pipelines using tools like Debezium, Flink, or other commercial solutions to replicate data from MySQL & Postgres to OLAP systems (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, ClickHouse) or Lakehouses (e.g., Delta Lake + Spark). This approach introduces significant operational overhead and expense.
Another emerging strategy is the zero-ETL approach, increasingly advocated by cloud providers. This model simplifies data integration by allowing the cloud provider to manage ETL pipelines, while necessitating reliance on specific cloud ecosystems and services.
Key features
MyDuck Server offers a real-time analytical replica that leverages DuckDB's native columnar storage and processing capabilities. It operates as a separate server, ensuring isolation and minimizing impact on your primary database. Key features include:
- Easy Zero-ETL: Built-in real-time replication from MySQL & Postgres with no complex pipelines to manage. It feels like a standard MySQL replica or Postgres standby. With the Docker image, passing a connection string is enough.
- MySQL & Postgres Protocol Compatibility: We take this seriously and are working to make this project integrate well with the existing ecosystem around MySQL & Postgres. Currently, it is already possible to connect to MyDuck with standard MySQL & PostgreSQL clients in many programming languages.
- HTAP Support: A standard database proxy can be deployed in front of a MySQL/Postgres primary and its MyDuck replica to route write operations to the primary and read operations to the replica. It just works.
- DuckDB SQL & Columnar I/O over Postgres Protocol: It's unnecessary to restrict ourselves to MySQL/Postgres's SQL expressiveness and row-oriented data transfer. The Postgres port accepts all DuckDB-valid SQL queries, and you can retrieve query results in columnar format via COPY (SELECT ...) TO STDOUT (FORMAT parquet/arrow)
.
- Standalone Mode: It does not need to be run as a replica. It can also act as a primary server that brings DuckDB into server mode and accepts updates from multiple connections, breaking DuckDB's single-process limitation.
Relevant Previous HN Threads
- pg_duckdb [1] (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41275751) is the official Postgres extension for DuckDB. It uses DuckDB as an execution engine to accelerate analytical queries by scanning Postgres tables directly.
- pg_mooncake [2] (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41998247) is a Postgres extension that adds columnstore tables for PG. It uses pg_duckdb under the hood but stores data in Lakehouse formats (Iceberg & Delta Lake).
- BemiDB [3] (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42078067) is also a DuckDB-based Postgres replica. Unlike us, they focus on storing data in Lakehouse format.
We believe MyDuck Server offers a compelling solution for those seeking high-performance analytics on their MySQL & Postgres data without the complexities and costs of traditional approaches. We're eager to hear your feedback and answer any questions you might have. Let me know what you think!

URL: https://www.myphotos.site
Author: gabigrin
Description: Hey HN! My friend and I love taking pictures on our phones, and we were looking for a super simple way to share them with the world. Google Photos albums are nice, but the result isn't slick enough and lacks customization options (embed, custom domain).
That's why we built myphotos.site - a micro SaaS that allows anyone to create a slick, minimal gallery website from Google Photos. Galleries can be iframe-embedded for those looking for full customization.
One thing we haven't solved yet - many Google Photos users (myself included) do not have images pre-organized in albums, so the fact that technically it takes 60 seconds to build a website doesn't take into account that you have to spend time picking the right images.
Would love to some feedback/ideas from hobbyist photographers here!

48. Show HN: A Simple, Ad-Free, Privacy-Respecting JSON Linter
URL: https://jsonlint.echovalue.dev/
Author: emiliano
Description: I built this JSON linter because, while there are plenty of great ones out there, I wanted something that fits my needs—ad-free, no tracking, privacy-focused, and lightweight. What started as a quick “1-hour project” quickly spiraled into a more "complex" challenge.
Initially, I used a simple <textarea>. It was easy, fast, and functional, but I wanted code highlighting for better readability. That’s when things got tricky. Implementing syntax highlighting meant moving to a <div> with contenteditable. While it works, it introduced issues like cursor jumping during formatting—one of those things that seems simple but can be maddening in practice.
Looking back, the better approach would’ve been to stick with a <textarea> for editing and use a separate <div> for displaying formatted, syntax-highlighted JSON. Lesson learned.
Right now, it works (though it’s not perfect), and I’m sure there are some rough edges in the editing experience. Still, it "works" and I plan to keep improving it over time. My next planned feature is adding JSON Query functionality, which should make it more versatile.
Honestly, I’m probably posting this just to hear comments like, “What’s the most useless thing you’ve ever built?” But hey, if you try it out, break it, or even like it, let me know!

Description: Introducing Odd Circles – A Platform That Even Seth Godin Swears By!
Hey everyone! After years of dreaming, learning, and iterating, I’m thrilled to introduce OddCircles.com – a project close to my heart. It’s an innovative community-building platform designed to connect people, create thriving groups, and discover events happening around you.
But here’s the kicker: Seth Godin, the legendary marketer and author, is one of our biggest advocates. He uses Odd Circles to manage his worldwide audience across 200+ groups, leveraging it to foster meaningful connections and vibrant communities. If Seth sees its value, I hope you will too!
What’s Odd Circles About? Odd Circles is built for creators, organisers, and anyone who wants to bring people together.
Here’s what you can do right now:
Create groups, host events, and gather RSVPs – no fuss, no fees for small communities. Explore groups in your area.
Why Did I Build Odd Circles? Years ago, I tried to make a similar platform but failed spectacularly. I hired a budget developer to “build an MVP” while knowing little about software myself. The results were… less than ideal. Instead of giving up, I pivoted, learned to code, and built Odd Circles from scratch using Ruby on Rails.
I was driven by one question: Why isn’t there a platform that connects all kinds of groups and events, big or small, with a focus on discovery and community?
Why Not Just Use Meetup or Eventbrite? Good question. Here’s where they fall short:
Meetup.com:
- No free tier for small or non-profit groups (which make up a huge chunk of communities).
- Poor search and discovery features.
- “Meetup” as a name doesn’t resonate with modern, dynamic communities.
Eventbrite:
- Excellent for ticketing but lacks the community and group management aspect.
- Discovery? Almost non-existent.
The Odd Circles Difference
- Odd Circles is for everyone – big groups, small groups, and everything in between. Whether you’re a local knitting club, a tech meetup, or someone like Seth Godin managing global audiences, we’ve got you covered.
Our vision is simple: Capture the real-world activity happening around us and make it accessible to all.
Join the Movement Odd Circles is in its early stages, but the feedback so far has been fantastic. I’m opening the doors wider to invite YOU to try it out and share your thoughts.
Here’s how you can help:
Explore: Check out OddCircles.com and see how it fits your group’s needs. Feedback: Let me know what works and what doesn’t. Your insights are invaluable. Request Features: Tell me what would make it even better.
Start creating your community today at OddCircles.com!
