5. Show HN: Bootstrapped Alternative to Airplane.dev

URL: #

Author: vlugovsky

Description: Hi founders!

Yesterday, when we learned that Airplane.dev was shutting down, we decided it might be the time for our first post on HN. We hope to assist Airplane customers in migrating to our platform (https://uibakery.io) to minimize the impact of this unfortunate event.

UI Bakery is a bootstrapped company and has not taken any VC investments. My co-founders and I, all software engineers, funded this business with the profits from our previous software services business. In the early stages of our previous venture, we developed several popular open-source projects (admin dashboard template, Angular UI kit). Thus our client projects often included admin panels, dashboards, and portals. As a result, the idea of building a platform that would allow faster delivery and also support a subscription-based business model was a no-brainer. Eventually, we made the risky decision to fully commit to UI Bakery. After a period of searching for PMF, we built a small and effective team (10 people, growing now), and became profitable.

UI Bakery can help build both internal tools and external-facing apps (in fact, some of our clients embed UI Bakery on public websites). Our users can:

  • Connect to 30 data sources (SQL and NoSQL, HTTP APIs, and 3rd-party services like Salesforce and Stripe).
  • Use the Drag and Drop UI builder with 75 components to build responsive web apps based on your data.
  • Create simple and sophisticated business logic with Actions that can read/write data from data sources on UI interactions and as scheduled jobs/webhooks.
  • Generate code/SQL with AI code generation and Chat with UI Bakery documentation Assistant to build apps faster

Alongside features similar to competitors, UI Bakery enhances the developer experience with multi-step actions, varied workflows, and multi-page applications. Our pricing is also tailored to be competitive. A distinctive feature is our Shared Permission Groups, enabling unlimited end-user access at a fixed fee for identical permission sets, adding value and scalability.

We believe UI Bakery can be a good alternative to Airplane and other internal tool builders in the current economic environment. Most of these products are VC-funded, and investors are more likely to further invest in AI than low-code platforms. Therefore, their founders may face tough decisions: shut down their business (like internal.io did), sell it (as Airplane did), or buy out shares (a rare move like Gumroad). Previously, I have heard concerns during the demos about our lack of fundraising, but now I believe the tables have turned. Having a bootstrapped and profitable vendor seems like an advantage for a large number of businesses.

Feel free to share your feedback, and let us know what you think about UI Bakery.

    Thanks!

6. Show HN: RAGatouille, a simple lib to use&train top retrieval models in RAG apps

Show HN: RAGatouille, a simple lib to use&train top retrieval models in RAG apps - Project Screenshot

URL: https://github.com/bclavie/RAGatouille

Author: bclavie

Description: Hey HN!

If you’re at all interested in LLMs/LLM-apps, you’ve probably heard of RAG: Retrieval-Assisted Generation, i.e. retrieving relevant documents to give to your LLM as context to answer user queries.

Today, I’m releasing RAGatouille v0.0.1, whose aim is to make it as easy as can be to improve your RAG pipelines by leveraging state-of-the-art Information Retrieval research.

As of right now, there’s quite a big gap between common everyday practice and the IR literature, and a lot of the gap is because there just aren’t good ways to quickly try out and leverage SotA IR techniques. RAGatouille aims to contribute to that problem! We do have a bit of a roadmap to support more IR papers, like UDAPDR [1], but for now, we focus on integrating ColBERT[2]/ColBERTv2[3], super strong retrieval methods, who are particularly good at generalising to new data (i.e.e your dataset!)

RAGatouille can train&fine-tune ColBERt models, index documents and search those indexes, in just a few lines of code. We also include an example in the repo on how to use GPT-4 to create fine-tuning data when you don’t have any annotated user queries, which works really well in practice.

Feel free to also check out the thread and discussion on Twitter/X[4] if you're interested!

I hope some of you find this useful, and please feel free to reach out and report any bugs, this is essentially a beta release and any feedback would be much appreciated.

Show HN: I've built an iOS app to create your own mobile wallpapers using AI - Project Screenshot

URL: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/wally-create-your-wallpapers/id6473636677

Author: Nyoxide

Description: Hey everyone,

I'm Adrien, an indie iOS developer passionate about creating user-friendly, easy-to-use applications. I'm super excited to introduce you to my latest creation: Wally: Create your Wallpapers !

- Wally's Concept - Wallpapers add a personal touch to our phones. Often, we settle for what's easily available on apps or web, but why not make something truly your own? That's where Wally comes in. It's a straightforward app that lets you create your own unique wallpapers using AI – no skills needed. Every wallpaper you make is unique and exclusively yours.

I've designed Wally to be as user-friendly as possible, just like my previous apps. Creating a new wallpaper is so easy, just follow these three simple steps:

1. Choose a Subject: The subject is the central element of your wallpaper. A list of pre-defined subjects is available, with new ones added regularly.

2. Choose a Style: Guide the AI to achieve your desired result by selecting a style from our list.

3. Choose Color Tints (Optional): You can pick up to three color tints to influence the AI, leading to surprising outcomes. Or, leave the choice to the AI, based on your selected subject and style.

Then, all you need to do is press a button and... voilà! Your new wallpaper is generated in an instant. The whole process takes just a few seconds. Keep in mind, though, that the results might vary depending on the chosen subject and style, since we're working with the creativity of AI.

- Pricing - Wally is free to download. Wallpapers can be saved to the Photos library once 'unlocked'. Unlocking can be done by sharing the wallpaper on social media, or by going Premium.

I'm deeply committed to fair pricing. Hence, you can enjoy Wally without paying, thanks to the share-to-unlock feature. Premium users gain unlimited access to all features for $4.99/month. To be transparent, I'm not a huge fan of subscriptions but this is necessary initially since it’s very difficult to predict real AI usage costs. Once I have more data, I'm hoping to offer a cheaper plan, like $1.99/month, or even a one-time fee, if revenues permit.

Meanwhile, you'll soon have the option to unlock a single wallpaper for a one-time fee of $0.99, which should be great for occasional unlocks.

- Try Wally Today! - I invite you all to download Wally from the App Store and give it a try, it's free. If you like using Wally, please consider rating and reviewing it on the App Store. Your support helps me reach more users and continue delivering the best possible experiences. Your feedbacks are also warmly welcomed !

- Promo Codes - Excited to dive into Wally's full potential? I've got a special treat for you! Here are some promo codes for a free upgrade to Premium. Grab one before they're gone and enjoy creating unlimited wallpapers without any restrictions

23. Show HN: Nova nine months later – updates after a year working with GPT

Show HN: Nova nine months later – updates after a year working with GPT - Project Screenshot

URL: https://asknova.ai/

Author: samueltates

Description: Hey HN - I shared my project nova at the start of the year and got some great feedback and thought some of you might like an update.

Short version : a big piece of feedback was that it was hard to use, so I’ve completed a massive usability and onboarding pass, culminating in this overview video capturing the workflows and features available and I’d love for you to check it out : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lq8lVwYMdJM

Long version : my initial share was an early prototype of nova, a customisable ai assistant, you can see the thread here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36651557

Since then

- got some great feedback and burst of users - and everything held together!

- got structured json responses running internal commands, start of independent ‘agents’

- created ‘loadouts’ which are sets of cartridges as agents with their own workspaces

I have been able to use it for work and side projects and an interface for configuring agents has come in really handy. I have felt a bit discouraged as similar work came out, but wanted to do my idea justice, so have kept at it.

Recent progress

- added past conversation retrieval and recall grouped by loadout

- switched over to open AI function calling and improved the async workflows

- added web search, image generation, video editing, and better note handling

- plus lots of refactoring, bug squashing and trying new stuff like voice

Some numbers

- got up to $500 + spent on credits with openAI per month (whoops)

- accidentally spent about $4k one month, (don’t tell my wife)

- lots just using guest nova profile, including lots of people in china (你好,中国朋友们!)

- had a few hundred different unique sign ups, and a few regular users

- I’ve typed something like a million characters personally, I use it every day

Current stack

- still react frond end, pythong back end, quart + prisma -> planet scale, big area for optimisation there, plus some db handling I’d like to tidy up

- I am starting to do more compute heavy stuff, eg video editing, and looking at breaking those up into discrete services, probably migrating to AWS (from railway), so I can pass jobs to the right hardware

Where to next

So I basically committed myself to finalising what I’d call ‘my current sprint’ - bug free, better onboarding and usability, solid deployment to clients. I’m declaring sprint complete as of this post (about three months behind schedule).

However I’m still pretty obsessed, my next set of goals are:

- much better knowledge management and retrieval : go from a patchwork of file handling and retrieval to a unified system and interpreter

- expose agents to each other so they can both query and retrieve based on other agents threads, but also action and make requests.

- let users add their own API key, expose nova api to more clients and add other models and ideally do desktop version

One thing I’ve considered is open sourcing at least a version of the client and server as packages. I haven’t done anything open source, but could see it as an interesting challenge.

Anyway, I hope you get a chance to try out the updates, you can test them out at https://asknova.ai/

I’d love to hear about your onboarding experience, especially if you feel a sense of continuity from the guest to logged in use. If you have ideas on how to utilise it or feature requests I'd love to hear from you.

If you have any feedback, or want to chat, hit me @samueltates on twitter or me@samueltate.com

thanks HN and have a great year!

24. Show HN: Autonomous AI Agents for Online Stores

Show HN: Autonomous AI Agents for Online Stores - Project Screenshot

URL: https://www.algomo.com/shopify-ai-agents

Author: dk189

Description: Hi folks! I'm Dimitrios Konstantinidis, and I'm really excited to share what our startup has been working on: https://l.algomo.com/9NS3ap

Algomo automates online stores' customer service using AI agents. You log in, connect Algomo to your Shopify shop, run a web crawler, and all is ready to work within a few minutes.

Here's a demo video: https://l.algomo.com/UKSggb

We believe that most online shop owners want to spend their time doing creative stuff and market their products. Instead, a lot of time at online stores is spent on repetitive customer queries instead.

Unlike generic AI agents, our AI agents specialize in customer service for online stores.

Customer: "I want black shoes, size 10" AI Agent: Pulls data from Shopify API and presents the best choices with pictures

The agents run modules which include a procedural plan of attack, and execute prompts using RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) to utilize the most up-to-date context to do the job, including documentation and API calls from Shopify, crawled with LangChain and stored in vector DBs. Our agents also escalate and hand-over to humans, do small talk, and potentially can perform tasks like changing a delivery address. The agents can run in our Algomo Cloud, and we plan to also run fully on-premise with self-hosted LLMs.

Today, we specialize in e-commerce but we're also building sector agnostic agents that will connect and run on any API, and potentially, we plan to open up Generic Tools to enable the community to build their own modules too by calling any endpoint/API of your choosing.

You can try Algomo on any small website for free. For larger websites and stores, we charge based on the number of AI conversations starting from $9/month.

Please try it out and let us know what you think. We are obsessed with improving, so please let us know feedback!

This tool has been a game-changer for me. It allows seamless merging and updating of Grafana dashboards by combining panels from different sources. The real advantage is its ability to update existing panels while preserving the dashboard layout.

Curious to see it in action? Check out the example[2].

I'm eager to hear your thoughts! What do you think, and what other tools do you use for similar challenges? Let's swap insights!

Show HN: Flyleaf: "Read-later" app for iOS and macOS - Project Screenshot

URL: https://moehrenzahn.de/project/flyleaf/

Author: moehrenzahn

Description: Hi everyone, I'm an indie developer based in germany and I built my own take on a read-later app for iPhone, iPad and macOS.

The main reason I built this is because I love to read stuff one page at a time (like an ebook) instead of having to constantly scroll vertically, and no apps I could find offer this reliably, especially on the Mac.

The app is built 100% with Swift and 95% SwiftUI.

It's not quite ready for prime time yet, but you can take the Testflight beta for a spin, if thats your thing.

But regardless, I'm interested in your opinion on book-like page by page reading versus continuous vertical scrolling. Is that something that matters to other people?

Over the years this chat accumulated more and more songs and we wanted a way to create a playlist out of these songs and update that playlist whenever a new song is sent in. So we decided to create AutoSpoto.

AutoSpoto is a MacOS app that allows users to look at all of the songs they have sent and received in iMessage chats. The app scans a users chat.db database and detects any Spotify links that have been sent for each chat. The user can then choose to create a Spotify playlist out of the songs sent in a chat of their choosing. At AutoSpoto we are firmly committed to privacy and do not collect, store or process any message data or personal information. Our full privacy guide can be found here: https://autospoto.xyz/privacy

Currently on the free tier, a user can create 1 free playlist from an iMessage chat of their choice. With a one time payment, a user can create unlimited playlists, each of which will be automatically updated when new songs are sent in.

If there's anything we can do better, please let us know.

37. Show HN: Munchy – Automated Diet Planning Website

Show HN: Munchy – Automated Diet Planning Website - Project Screenshot

URL: https://www.munchy.fyi/

Author: lukelucus

Description: I'm working on an automated diet planning app and I'd love to get your thoughts on it. You tell it about your diet and lifestyle, and it crafts personalized meal plans. It's still a work in progress - we are missing food item images in the sub-menus, and it can stumble on strict diets.

We're using a donation model to keep it community-focused. That way, we are building for it to be genuinely useful for everyone here.

As this is my first project of this kind, I'm excited to share the journey with you. If you're interested in following the progress and getting regular updates, feel free to join our Discord server:

URL: https://tatask.com

Author: mgirkins

Description: Hi HN, I'm Max, the maker of Tatask.

Tatask is not just another to-do list app. It adds infinite nesting so you can simply break down and structure your tasks. The smaller the task the easier it is to complete.

I've just launched Tatask on the App Store in time to hopefully capitalise on people making 2024 plans. The web version has been iterated on for almost a year now.

I hope that this subtly different approach to to-dos will work as well for you as it has been for me and many others already.

I'm always open to constructive feedback and looking forward to hearing from everyone here as I have had great responses when getting involved in other discussions.

Happy planning :)

41. Show HN: Choir – Collective Intelligence as a GPT

URL: https://choir.chat

Author: Yusefmosiah

Description: Hey HN, Choir turns ChatGPT into a new kind of discursive platform, a collective intelligence forum.

When you write a prompt to Choir, in addition to the AI response, Choir shows you what humans have said that relates to the subject of your prompt.

I had planned to build a few more features before launching, but I've been getting rave reviews from early users, and I just learned that the GPT Store is launching next week. So I figure, no time like the present to launch and get feedback!

Excited to see what you all contribute to Choir!

Description: Happy New Year everyone.

Almost 2 years ago I started to implement my idea of a Pub/Sub search service for humans.

Define your interest query once and stay tuned, Awakari will notify you once a matching event occurs. Track brands, jobs, whatsoever.

Not enough sources? Add your own source like RSS feed, Telegram channel, web site. More integrations coming soon, e.g. ActivityPub/WhatsApp or ML stage to label incoming images/videos.

The service is free for use and doesn't store any user data.
